Prior to joining Rakuten, Inc. in July, 2016, Dr. Sulayman K. Sowe was a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) of Japan. He served as a joint research
fellow for Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and United Nations University (UNU), in Japan. He worked as a Senior Researcher at UNU-MERIT, The Netherlands, and as a Research Fellow at the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University in Greece. He also worked in a number of educational and medical research institutions in the Gambia. Dr. Sowe is a Visiting Scholar at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan, Adjunct Researcher with the Research Institute of Open Source at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, and a consultant for the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) of the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS).
A national of the Republic of The Gambia, Dr. Sowe holds a PhD summa cum laude in Informatics from Aristotle University (Greece), Advanced Diploma and MSc in Computer Science from Sichuan University (China), BEd in Science Education from Bristol University (UK), and a Higher Teachers Certificate in Physics and Chemistry from The Gambia College, The Gambia.
He has wide teaching experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Research Methods, Project and Product Management, ICT4D, Mathematics, and Physics. His research interests include Cloud Computing and Big Data, Open Source Software Development, Knowledge Sharing, Information Systems Evaluation, Social and Collaborative Networks, Software Engineering Education, and ICT4D. Dr. Sowe is an eloquent guest speaker and he has over seventy publications in numerous journals, conference proceedings, international workshops and seminars, serves in a number of academic, journals review boards, international program, and think-tank committees. He is the editor of two books: “Emerging Free and Open Source Software practices”, IGI Global, 2008 and “Free and Open Source Software and Technology for Sustainable Development”, UNU Press, 2012.
