Shunsuke (Shun) is a Design Director at IDEO, Tokyo. His experience and skills are in using design to help clients tackle challenges, solve problems and realise their goals. He believes that design can bring positive and valuable change to Japan.
Prior to joining IDEO Tokyo, he worked at Panasonic for six years from 2002–8 where he was Senior Designer. His responsibility was to deliver compelling designs for the Global market by combining consumer insights, manufacturing process and colour material finish. After that, he moved to the UK to work with PDD, a leading British design and innovation consultancy, where he was Creative Lead. Shun worked on a broad range of projects from consumer electronics, automotive, medical, packaging to service design. He built from scratch a successful and diverse portfolio of Japanese clients including Hitachi, Buffalo, Fujitsu, Nikon. He has also worked with non-Japanese clients such as Speedo, Novo Nordisc, Merck Serono, Samsung.
Shun is an award-winning designer and his product designs have won both national and international awards including the Wallpaper Design Awards (designer collectives) and Good Design Awards. His work has been exhibited at prestigious shows such as Salone del Mobile in Milan, Tokyo Designers Block, and 100% Design in London.
A sought-after spokesperson, Shun’s thought leadership and points of view have been published in newspapers, books and broadcasted on TV including Nikkei Design Magazine, “Plastics” published by Rotovision and TV Tokyo World Business Satellite. He was also a judge for “Ignite Japan”, and has taught at i.school, Tokyo University.
Shun holds a BA degree from Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design in the UK. While studying, he worked at furniture design company, Azumi. Shun is passionate about food and enjoys making cakes in his spare time.
