Toward the Singularity - Developing our future with new AI Engine and ExaFLOPS Supercomputer -

Singularity is getting even nearer driven by "the law of accelerated return".

The majority is expecting the Singularity is coming around 2045, but not a few including me are thinking 2030 is also the possibility. The Singularity by itself is truly the most significant and the greatest event, but the period from now to the Singularity is more important for the human being, while we have not yet started any preparation for that.

1,000 time more powerful AI Engine and ExaFLOPS Supercomputer which will be developed by our team by 2020 will definitely change the whole world and it will pave the road to the Singularity. In this session, we will discuss what will happen to us, our society and the world within 5 to 15 years toward the Singularity.

Beyond Breakpoints: Improving Performance for Responsive Sites
Performance is important but often overlooked when it comes to building responsive sites. We often spend time discussing layouts, breakpoints, and designs that fits well for both desktops and mobile but we do not invest more time in thinking about performance. We learned this the hard way when we revamped Viki's main web page to a responsive site a few months ago. In the process of improving Viki's performance, we discovered practical techniques and useful tools in helping us enhance our user experience and monitor our performance. In this talk, we are going to share the present and the future of performance optimizations for responsive sites.

Design Sprints: Unlocking the Wisdom of Teams
Design Sprints are the best way we know of to help teams build the right thing – a product that customers will love. But more than that, Design Sprints are a way to be sure that everyone on a team has a voice and can influence the team’s decisions. Too often, teams do not hear from those who are new or different or who do not agree with the rest of the team – and then the team loses the value of its diversity. Design Sprints help teams consider the ideas of everyone and come up with great solutions to tough problems in a very short time.

There are many vision sensors such as high-speed camera, IR camera, depth camera, gaze tracker, and action camera. They are getting smaller, lighter, and less expensive. These vision sensors are imporntat because they can see what human cannot. By using such invisible information effectively, it becomes possible to develop natural, intuitive, and innovative HCI. In this talk, I would like to show some of our researches that uses advanced vision sensors, including LCD tabletop, interactive surface on the water, gaze navigation using unaware blur, dynamic projection mapping, and BallCam.

Blockchain - Systems Without Boundaries
Blockchains have the potential to support businesses and processes without boundaries. Before blockchains, systems relied on intermediaries and duplicate data flows to manage and reconcile information between parties. Now with blockchain technology, these flows can be achieved directly in a secure and non-repudiable way. Blockchains can connect parties more efficiently and effectively than ever before, reducing the latency and inconsistency inherent in many multi-party processes. Furthermore, the secure nature of blockchain transactions and the immutability of the data allows for processes to be automated to a far greater degree due to the level of trust we can place in that data.Blockchains are a natural fit in a world of connected things.  This talk will explore the benefits that blockchains provide and how they could be used to enhance everyday interactions.

Introduction to Mindfulness

Mindfulness ― one of the fundamental teachings by the Buddha,  has being highly valued practice for the last 2,500 years in many Asian countries such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Japan, Korea and China.  As historical records shows, mindfulness has helped many people to live a meaningful life in this region. Finally, the advancements of technology such as fMRI machines, EEG studies and empirical studies have enable scientists to show the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation for the human wellbeing as a scientific fact. This scientific knowledge has made mindfulness accessible for millions of people through out the world and made available for a broader audience  as a secular tool for improving human wellbeing. Therefore, mindfulness has being actively promoted in various places such as schools, governments and workplaces.

In this talk we will introduce mindfulness and the scientific research made it popular among a wider audience. Further, we will introduce Rakuten Mindfulness Clubs activities and briefly touch upon the potential application to Human Computer Interaction.

Large-Scale Machine Learning for Ecommerce

Ecommerce websites today have become massive marketplaces of several hundred million products. Rakuten Ichiba alone hosts more than 300 million products. Such large marketplaces present numerous challenges in organizing all the product information so that customers are able to find products in an efficient manner. In this talk, I will describe how large-scale machine learning is helping us to organize and search this vast collection of information.

Specifically, I will talk about two of our projects in product categorization and search relevance. Product categorization refers to the task of organizing product information into appropriate genres of a taxonomy, and a good product categorization helps customers navigate a website correctly and find products efficiently. Additionally, I will briefly talk about our work on search relevance that uses feedback based on customer clicks to improve search algorithm in an ongoing manner.

Semantic Technologies for Data Access
Semantic technologies are increasingly gaining importance to cope with the wealth of data that humans are confronted with in diverse application domains. One key challenge where they are particularly promising is the one where end users are put in charge of directly accessing complex data.  In such settings, semantic information is used to support the users by providing them a view of the data that they can easily understand and explore.  In this presentation we illustrate some significant challenges that arise in this context.  On the one hand we exhibit technologies that allow engineers to semantically enrich high-level user requests, and seamlessly access terabytes of relational data.We discuss a significant use-case of this in the oil and gas engineering domain.  On the other hand, we show how to automatically enrich complex taxonomies to improve easiness of navigation and profitability.  We present the approach to this used in Rakuten Ichiba.

Effective Communication in Multicultural Teams

Historically, most people spent most of their lives interacting with people from the same culture and who spoke the same language. Globalization has put more people from different backgrounds in direct contact with each other, and this trend is only accelerating. The next adventure of humankind is learning to be effective working on diverse teams – overcoming language and cultural gaps, and making the most of the varied perspectives and ideas that people from different backgrounds bring. This involves understanding the impact of culture, understanding one’s own cultural style, learning effective techniques for communicating with those who have different styles, and learning how to bridge the language barrier.

This session will explore these issues, with a focus on what everyone can do to make communication in their teams more effective. You’ll come away from this session with a new awareness as well as things you can try right away.

Workshop ( Blockchain / CoderDojo Futakotamagawa(日本語) / P-kies Programming Workshops(日本語) )
Build Your Own Blockchain (BlockChain Lab.)
  • Biography:
  • Workshop:
Want to know what blockchain is all about or create your own RTC Coin? Then why not join one of our workshops and build one! We will walk you through the process of running your own blockchain node and using it to issue digital tokens and assets that you can share with other attendees!
Attendees will get the chance to:
•Create a blockchain node and join a private blockchain•Participate in the consensus / mining process of the blockchain•Issue coins and other custom assets to send to other participants on the chain•Generate Public/Private Keys and import them to a Wallet•Construct transactions and learn how to sign and publish them to a chain •Construct complex multi-party, multi-asset transactions •Workshop Requirements

Since its debut, the program has been a foundation for our productions, and we have been committed to always pay close attention and stay one step ahead of the changes in the surrounding environment of children. In 1993, a new innovative kids program "SUPER KIDS ZONE Ponkickies" debuted and a large-scale outdoor event for children entitled "P-kies Wonderland" was held in the summer of 1998, the following year of Fuji Television's relocation to Daiba.

Establishment of Fuji Television Kids Entertainment, Inc.  In 2000, Fuji Television Kids Entertainment, Inc., specializing in the production of content for children, was established by Fuji Television. Its founding mission: to provide child-care support thorough the production of high-quality kids programs. With the beginning of the 21st century, "Hirake! Ponkicki" has been renewed to "Ponkickies 21," kicking things up a notch. In 2002, "Saturday Kids Camp" started on-air. In addition to production of TV programs, we started hosting live events and musicals as well as creating website.

Child-care Support Businesses and Gachapin Nikki (Gachapin's Blog)  We set out on a new endeavor to produce our show's core characters, Gachapin and Mukku, to go onto a new stage. By eagerly venturing into a wide range of areas, such as blog and Twitter, Gachapin and Mukku successfully reached new fan base, which resulted in remarkably expanding our child-care support businesses. In 2007, "Gachapin Club" began airing, and in 2008, three new programs, "Be Ponkicki," "Shogaku Rokunensei (Sixth Grade)" and "Monokoto Dagashiya" (BS Fuji), were produced.

(Osaka) Machine Learning: Sentiment Analysis
The popularity and abundant, quite honestly excessive, usage of social media provides a plethora of data every day. While the majority of internet content is cute cat videos and internet memes, there is definitely valuable information hidden in these platforms. People use these social media platforms as a medium to express their emotions, whether it be joy for their Samsung Galaxy Note's new explosion feature, or the frustration around Prince William's receding hairline. These posts contain sentiment, which is data businesses can take advantage of to gauge how the audience feels about themselves or their new product. When used properly, this analysis may eventually become an important part of the decision-making process. As manually going through every single post is tedious and virtually impossible, our idea is to create a simple program that learns how to analyze sentiment. As an example, we will train it to try to understand how Twitter feels about our wonderful 2016 presidential candidates: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

AInthropology: AI, cyber-psychology, and the meaning of God

What pictures come to your mind when you are thinking about AI?

Is AI a complicated set of algorithms in an advanced computer program? Is it an information tool intended to improve customer service? Is it Case, William Gibson’s hacker, falling in love with his virtual Molly in Neuromancer? Is it an imaginary door to a dangerous future? Or maybe it is just a mirror of your own Self?

The answers to these questions differ considerably and depend on a variety of factors, from educational background, social environment and computer literacy, up to traditional values of the culture we grew up in. Our background shapes to a great extent the way we perceive the world around us, and technology has become a central part of the world. Yet, many of these factors are not embedded in the business world and in the development of AI. Instead of functioning as smooth communicators between AI and its users, they remain almost invisible and often misused.

The presentation focuses on the importance of cultural and social factors in the development and design of AI in the contemporary global world. It will raise key issues that should be addressed by every person in the field, from computer developers to intellectuals thinks, such as the importance of proper semantics and the sensitivities of language, the psychological importance of clear shape and harmony of colors, the importance of religious beliefs in shaping emotions towards AI, and even the significance of a sense of humor in different cultures and languages.

AI playing Go and Driving Cars, What’s Next?

The victory of AlphaGo against Lee Sedol in March 2016 is a new milestone in Artificial Intelligence history, next one might be the mass adoption of self-driving cars or the generalized use of chatbots. These successes both raise expectations and increase the fear of an Artificial Intelligence getting out of control, which is now addressed in books and scientific papers.

Even though some other human capabilities like natural language are still way beyond machine's reach, the fear of this "control problem" is sometimes intensified by the assumption that human intelligence will be at some point surpassed in all domains by machines even if it is a controverse whether human elementary abilities like subjective experience, consciousness, moral values are even theoretically transferable to computers.

In a New World – At Work and Play –Intelligent Visual Engagement is Key
In the past decade, mobile and web technologies have made a tremendous difference in how people work and live. Information, entertainment, social media and personalized services are now a touch away. And yet the way most people communicate still awaits transformation. Digital collaboration remains driven by legacy technologies, such as phone, email and text chat, which offer limited context and tend to be impersonal forms of interaction.  One of the next great adventures for humankind is to fundamentally change the way individuals and groups communicate across their personal and professional lives. Imagine the ability to collaborate with anyone, anywhere as effectively as if you were together in person. Thanks to emerging technologies such as pervasive video conferencing, co-browsing and web real-time communications (WebRTC), this dream of real-life visual engagement is now approaching reality.   This new world of ubiquitous collaboration will be frictionless for users, enabling them to connect instantly and intuitively wherever they are within the context of what they are doing. It will extend visual and Omnichannel communication to more people on a large scale, relying on a common collaboration core to bridge the gaps between different devices, apps, browsers and communication platforms. And it will be highly contextual, incorporating advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning to better predict user preferences and serve up more personalized, efficient experiences. In this session, the speaker will demonstrate new leading-edge solutions that deliver on the promise of pervasive collaboration by overcoming many of the technology barriers that exist today. The speaker will also provide insight about where industries should focus in order to take part in this exciting transformation.
